Objective: use storyboard to build cutscene

To create a video clip, we usually use storyboard to visualize the picture or image of our ideas. It helps people to create scene much faster and efficient.
Since we are going to make a cutscene in Unity, we can use the same tool to help us set the scene much quicker.

In this article, I will follow the storyboard that created by Jonathan & Al to build the cutscene of “Get Key Card”.

Adjust camera from storyboard

The first shot we would need to make the camera take a over-the-shoulder shot with tilt up movement.

We need to set the camera to the right position and apply it to timeline.
Drag in the over shoulder virtual camera into timeline.

Then we need to adjust the animation. Click the add button on the top left and add an animation. Then drag the OTS(Over The Shoulder) camera into it.

Or you can drag in and select animation

Then we can adjust the camera in Animation tab.

Set the keyframe to make the camera move

And that is how we finish the first shot.

Next, we are going to create the second shot. As it shows in the storyboard, we will tilt down to the hand and focus on Darren’s success.

Let’s drag in the second camera from Hierarchy to timeline, just after the OTS camera.

As the OTS camera, we drag the second camera again into timeline and create an animation clip. Double click the animation to edit the keyframe.

As you can see, I did a little change and just match the third shot of the storyboard.

In the animation keyframe, I added a bonus keyframe to extend the last shot, with next frame it would jump to the next shot position and runs smoothly.

The shot changed in 2 frames.

Conclusion

It would be fast and efficient if we create the storyboard before animated it. Not just save time, but also can design the shot with more storytelling and manipulated with more elements.

Matching the fade in with 3 shots.
